A report by W Bro Peter Lovell MBE PPrGReg – Southgate Provincial Media Correspondent.

The last duty of any outgoing Master is to appoint his successor, and this W Bro Peter Gillett PPrSGW did with assurance and composure at the Installation meeting of Enfield Lodge No 1237, when he Installed Bro Graham Gathard as Worshipful Master.

A particularly poignant moment was when W Bro David Gathard gave the address to the Master, his brother Graham. David had served as Worshipful Master three times, the first occasion being in 2011-12, and as Acting Secretary read the ancient charges to the incoming Master.

The working tools in all three degrees were delivered by lay brethren. Those of the First Degree by Bro David Roberts, the Second Degree by Bro Justin Price, and the Third Degree by Bro Mark Sumner.

Enfield Lodge No 1237 is the oldest Middlesex Lodge to meet at Southgate Masonic Centre, having been consecrated on 1st December 1868. It has a Chapter of the Holy Royal Arch of Jerusalem attached to it, which was consecrated on the 4th October 1877.

Excellent Companion Edward Letchworth served as the Chapter’s First Principal on its consecration. He was a former Town Clerk of Enfield, and as Sir Edward Letchworth became Grand Secretary of the United Grand Lodge of England. Many Freemasons will be familiar with his name, as the regalia shop at Freemasons’ Hall is named after him.

The Lodge went on to hold a very happy meeting, followed by a convivial Festive Board.
