Freemasonry means different things to each of those who join. For some, it’s about making new friends and acquaintances. For others, it’s about being able to help deserving causes – making a contribution to family and for society. But for many, it is an enjoyable hobby.
Freemasonry is one of the world’s oldest and largest non-religious, non-political, fraternal and charitable organisation. It teaches self-knowledge through participation in a progression of ceremonies. Members are expected to be of high moral standing and are encouraged to speak openly about Freemasonry.

There are many misconceptions about Freemasonry, so it’s worth explaining what it is not.
Freemasonry is not a religion.
Members come from many different faiths and backgrounds, and Freemasonry does not seek to replace or compete with anyone’s personal beliefs. Religion is not discussed during Lodge meetings, and members are expected to respect the beliefs of others.
Freemasonry is not political.
The organisation does not support any political party or movement, and political discussion has no place within Lodge meetings. Freemasonry encourages members to treat one another with mutual respect, regardless of their personal views.
Freemasonry is not a secret society.
Whilst some traditional ceremonies remain private for members, Freemasonry itself is open and transparent. Members are encouraged to speak openly about their membership, and Lodges regularly take part in community events, open days and charitable activities.
Freemasonry is not about business or personal gain.
Joining Freemasonry is about friendship, personal development and helping others. Members come together to enjoy each other’s company, support charitable causes and contribute positively to their communities—not to gain commercial or professional advantage.
At its heart, Freemasonry is a welcoming organisation built on friendship, integrity, respect and service. It provides members with the opportunity to develop as individuals, build lifelong friendships and make a positive difference both within their local communities and beyond.
To become a Freemason, a man must be at least 18 years old, be decent, law-abiding and believe in a Supreme Being. When you become a Freemason you will join a Lodge of which there are over 200 in Middlesex. Most Lodges meet four to six times a year and usually on the same day of the week. Lodges also run a regular Lodge of Instruction evening, usually once a week, where members can learn more about Freemasonry and forge new friendships.
