As part of a daily advancement in masonic knowledge consider the Cable Tow and what it represents. It is one of the first items of Lodge equipment that we meet at our initiation. Without it there can be no ceremony, yet how many of us have taken the time to explore further its significance. There is a history about Cable Tows and a link is shown here.

A Dorset freemason W. Bro Brian Barton a member of the Loyal Manor Lodge No 6445 is a former Chief Petty Officer in the Royal Navy, As his Province, Dorset, is currently in Festival (2025) he wanted to use his skills of ropes and nautical knots to assist in raising donations in aid of the Masonic Charitable Foundation and is appealing to Lodges in other Provinces to purchase “bespoke” cable tows. So far, he has made over 500 which have been distributed to Lodges in the UK as well in overseas Districts of the United Grand Lodge of England.

Each Cable Tow is made from a single length of white rope, to denote purity and innocence. The noose is formed from a three-parted knot, representing the three who rule a Lodge. The tail has five consecutive knots to represent the five who hold a Lodge, whilst the overall length of seven feet refers to the seven who make it perfect.

The Cable Tows come in a presentation folder with a certificate and an explanation. They each cost £50 – which W. Bro Brian will pass on to the Province of Dorset Festival after a deduction for materials costs and delivery postage.
