The Cane

There is the proverb that “actions speak louder than words”. There is a counter to that assumption and W. Bro Vernon Watts PPrSGD, Secretary of Sunbury Lodge No 1733 having reached an important milestone birthday received a very special gift from his daughter Emily. A gift of words which Brother Vernon says made him so proud and emotional to receive such an eloquent poem presented in a special frame. Indeed, the fact that Emily wrote it herself shows a true sentiment of love for her dad and it is reproduced below.

The Cane

Beside my bed stands a cane
For times I need support, and in times of pain
This cane takes me forward and carries my weight
It’s there if I stumble and strengthens my gait
Think of the cane as a symbol of strength
A symbol that shows your whole life at such length
A Dad, a Grandad, a Mason, a Man
Propping us up when no-one else can
Something to cling on to when life takes a turn
A crutch to support us, encourage and then learn
You depend on your cane, to get you so far
It has its own place in the boot of the car
It’s brave to admit vulnerability to your Brother
But tomorrow you may be the one carrying another.
This cane we give, all shiny and new
Shows the courage and stability that we look to in you
So whether at home, the Lodge or with friends
Think of the message that this cane truly sends
We love you, support you and help you stand tall
You do the same for us, yet with no stick at all
Needing this stick, may not fill you with glee
But when you feel down, remember – So mote it be.
