Earlier this summer, we proudly shared the story of Jack Martin – son of W Bro Gary Martin PPAGDC, Almoner of Alert Lodge No. 5861 – as he prepared to take on the gruelling Castle to Coast Triathlon in support of the Campaign Against Living Miserably (CALM), a suicide prevention charity close to many hearts.
We’re now delighted to report that Jack not only completed this incredible challenge but did so with remarkable success – finishing 3rd in his category and 15th male overall out of a competitive field of around 350 starters!
The triathlon saw Jack:
- Swim 1.2 miles in the calm waters of Dorney Lake (the 2012 Olympic rowing venue)
- Cycle 66 miles through Buckinghamshire, the Surrey Hills and Sussex – in torrential conditions
- Run a punishing 14-mile trail across the South Downs, finally finishing on Brighton seafront, via the infamous Ditchling Beacon
Despite a wrong turn on the run that cost him a top-10 finish, Jack completed the triathlon in fine form and high spirits – even enjoying a well-earned pint on the Brighton seafront at the finish line!
As of writing, Jack has raised a fantastic £990 for CALM, and donations are still open. If you haven’t yet contributed and would like to support his efforts, you can do so here:

This was a self-funded event, meaning every penny raised goes directly to CALM and its vital work supporting those in crisis, especially young men who are most at risk.
On behalf of the wider Masonic community, we extend our warmest congratulations to Jack on this outstanding achievement. His determination, strength and compassion are a shining example of the values we hold dear.
Well done, Jack – we are incredibly proud of you!
