Middlesex Freemasons Support Hope Sensory Garden

A new chapter of community support and educational enrichment will begin on Friday 21st November at 2pm, when Ardeley St. Lawrence Church of England Primary School officially opens its newly created Hope Sensory Garden, a project made possible through the outstanding efforts of Middlesex Freemasons.

The sensory garden has been built under the leadership of W. Bro. Guy Barlow, a Middlesex Mason of Northwood Lodge No. 4994, with strong support from fellow Middlesex Freemasons and associated Masonic charities. Their collective efforts have transformed what was once an overgrown, unused area into a safe, welcoming and imaginative space designed to support the wellbeing and development of the children.

Creating special outdoor spaces such as a sensory garden, or a dedicated technology and craft area has long been an aspiration of the school, but funding such enhancements has been a challenge.

Through the determined efforts of Middlesex Freemasons, that aspiration has now become a reality. The combined support of Northwood Lodge No. 4994, other Middlesex Masonic lodges, and Masonic charities has led to the complete transformation of the garden space.

The newly completed Hope Sensory Garden offers:

  • Areas of vibrant colour and fragrant planting
  • Sensory boards and tactile features
  • A shimmering wiggly mirror
  • A calming water feature
  • An outdoor classroom
  • Quiet seating areas for reflection and self-regulation

The garden is designed to give children, particularly those experiencing sensory or emotional challenges a peaceful place to regulate, focus, and simply enjoy the therapeutic calm of nature.

The school hopes the garden will become a cherished sanctuary, helping pupils navigate the stresses of school life and supporting children of all backgrounds and needs.

It stands as a living example of Middlesex Freemasonry’s commitment to supporting young people, education, and community wellbeing.

As the Hope Sensory Garden opens its gates for the first time on 21st November, the entire school community celebrates not only a beautiful new space but also the generosity, craftsmanship, and fellowship shown by the Middlesex Freemasons, especially W Bro Guy Barlow who made it possible.
