Over the past year, W. Bro. Martyn Farrell PJGD, PDepGSupt in the Royal Arch, also PGJD in the Middlesex Mark degree, has led a heartfelt fundraising effort for a cause that often goes unseen, the Maternity Unit of the Epsom and St. Helier Hospital Foundation Trust. The work of midwives here is challenging and deeply emotional, as they frequently navigate the dual experiences of the joy of new life and the grief of loss. Not only do they support families through these emotional journeys, but they too bear these highs and lows daily.
For some time, the midwives have funded out of their own pockets the purchase of clothes and toys to place by the unfortunate babies that did not make it, before presenting them back to family members. This should have been funded by the charity trust, and recognising this need, Martyn took action to help relieve the burden on these dedicated staff members. His efforts, supported by Middlesex Craft, Royal Arch, and Mark units, raised over £700. Additionally, Martyn’s appeal to the Trustees of the Middlesex Mark Benevolent Fund secured a further grant of £5,000.
Recently, a visit to the unit was arranged by Molly Simpson, Head of Charity and Fundraising for the Epsom & St. Helier Hospitals Foundation Trust. W. Bro. Martyn, joined by VW. Bro. John Billett, PGJO, APGM of the Middlesex Mark Degree, met senior members of the Maternity team and were given a tour of the facilities.
Molly Simpson expressed her gratitude, saying, “These donations are going to make a meaningful impact, with funds going towards a new cold cot, allowing bereaved families more time with their baby, and towards developing a new Maternity Bereavement Suite to create a comforting, home-like environment for families in need. This generosity is already enhancing the care we provide. There are many more projects in the pipeline, including much-needed renovations to the Birth Centre, which hasn’t been updated in over 15 years.”
These projects rely heavily on charitable support. Both Martyn and John encourage Craft, Royal Arch, and Mark units to consider contributing to this cause.
