In a warm gathering amidst the awe-inspiring architecture of St Albans Cathedral, members and guests came together to celebrate Thanksgiving in gratitude and fellowship. This year’s celebration was marked by a beautiful October day, with sunlight filtering through the stained-glass windows and a gentle chill reminding us of the season’s steady approach toward winter. The vibrant autumn colours surrounding the Cathedral added to the reverent yet joyous atmosphere as the congregation gathered to give thanks.
The service began at 3:00 p.m. with the Opening Procession. Banners representing various lodges and chapters moved in procession, led by Brethren bearing symbols of tradition and unity. As they advanced down the nave, the Provincial Grand Organist, W. Bro James P. Mooney-Dutton filled the vast space with powerful, resonant organ chords.
The Welcome
The Dean of St Albans, the Very Rev’d Jo Kelly-Moore warmly welcomed all in attendance, followed by Pro Provincial Grand Master RW Bro David I Allan ProPGM, who opened the Volume of Sacred Law with reverence. Prayers led by the Provincial Grand Chaplain, W. Bro Revd Dr. William Dolman PAGChap, followed, weaving together the collective gratitude and hopes of all present.
The Dean then introduced a series of ecumenical readings from Christian, Jewish, Islamic, Hindu, and Sikh texts, signifying the universal spirit of gratitude and understanding. Each reading was a reminder of the shared values that bind us together, transcending individual faiths to celebrate unity and respect.
Prayers of Thanksgiving and Reflection
The Provincial Grand Chaplain led further prayers, offering heartfelt thanks for the guidance and camaraderie within the Masonic fellowship, while remembering those who could not join us. In a moment of profound silence, the congregation honoured the memory of Brethren lost in recent years, their lives a testament to service and fraternity. The Chaplain’s words reminded all to carry forward the ideals of love, compassion, and service to others as we enter the holiday season.
Following this, the W Bro Martin Kemble PAGDC offered a reading from the Gospel of Jeremiah, underscoring the importance of humility and integrity in service. His message highlighted that our actions should always stem from a sincere desire to help and inspire, rather than for recognition or praise. In these moments of contemplation, the congregation was reminded that true service is one that remains steadfast and selfless.
The Address
The Address was delivered by the Provincial Grand Chaplain of St Albans, Very Rev’d William Dolman, who spoke on the theme of “Gratitude and Service.” Drawing inspiration from recent reflections by church leaders, he emphasised the power of giving thanks and serving one another. He reflected on the words of the Archbishop of Canterbury from King Charles III’s coronation, stressing the value of dedicating oneself to the welfare of others, whether through charity work, community support, or acts of kindness. In quoting John 15:13, Rev. Dolman reminded all present that laying down one’s life for friends represents the ultimate expression of love and service. He urged everyone to embody these virtues within their communities, letting their actions speak to the core Masonic values of brotherly love, relief, and truth.
The Provincial Grand Chaplain closed his address by expressing gratitude for the Provincial leadership and all those who contribute their time and energy to support others. He extended thanks to the Cathedral clergy for hosting this Thanksgiving service, creating a sacred space for reflection and fellowship.
Final Blessing
The Dean of St Albans led the Final Blessing, offering words of peace and encouragement as the congregation prepared to depart. The choir concluded with John Rutter’s uplifting “The Lord Bless You and Keep You,” filling the Cathedral with a message of hope and gratitude. As the service came to an end, the Provincial Grand Master closed the Volume of the Sacred Law, and the gathering stood to sing the National Anthem with heartfelt unity.
The Thanksgiving service at St Albans Cathedral was a meaningful occasion, reminding all present of the enduring power of gratitude, service, and faith as we journey into the winter season and beyond.
