The programme of Prostate Cancer (PSA) testing in the Province is about to resume and dates have been set for both Harrow (4th July) and Twickenham (17th July). Reminders have been sent to those who have been recalled and the opportunity to register for either a first test or ongoing three-year testing. The PSA testing programme has been a life saver for a number of Brethren in the Province, not least W. Bro Howard Lewis who has been astute in having regular tests over a period of time.
He has had 10 PSA tests altogether and latterly the CHAP’s test results showed a situation which needed to be attended to. Howard then visited his GP in earnest and a referral was made to the Macmillan Nurses who would explain in detail the next procedures for biopsy and subsequent treatments. The biopsy proved positive for cancer. At that stage he began a series of hormone tablets and a course of injections to be administered over a period. However, there was another stage in the treatment plan and a further referral to Mount Vernon Hospital was made where radiotherapy would commence in May 2025 for a period of twenty days.
The essential point here is that without the PSA testing provided by CHAPS Howard may never have known his condition and undetected may have had serious consequences. The importance of having this prostate check is critical. Therefore, those who have booked PSA testing should ensure they turn up. Your life may depend on it.
Howard will no doubt provide news of his treatment progress and prognosis and has given his permission to publish his story.
