A Legacy of Compassion

For more than twenty years, Middlesex Freemasons have stood side by side with Noah’s Ark Children’s Hospice – a vital sanctuary for children with life-limiting or life-threatening conditions and their families. To date, Freemasons have generously contributed over £243,000, with the majority supporting the creation of the hospice building, “The Ark,” and vital medical equipment. Yet, the need for ongoing support remains as urgent as ever.

A Personal Visit – A Deepened Connection

W Bro Gerry Inow, Chairman of Harrow Masonic Centre, recently visited the hospice with his granddaughter Beatrice during a “Family Day” – a day that left a lasting impression.

Beatrice had received care from Noah’s Ark following her successful treatment for leukemia at Great Ormond Street Hospital. Seeing her play and smile in the welcoming surroundings of the hospice was a powerful reminder of the very real impact that charitable giving has.

While there, Gerry met Laura Grundy, the Community Engagement Manager, who shared her gratitude for the ongoing support from Middlesex Freemasonry. “Since 2002, Freemasonry has donated £243,000 to Noah’s Ark,” she confirmed, “with 65% of this contributing to capital appeal and essential equipment. We are deeply thankful.”

The Ark – A Place of Love and Light

In a previous visit, W. Bro Alfie Buckland, Provincial Grand Charity Steward, attended an open day at the hospice, alongside Freemasons from neighbouring provinces. He described the experience as both emotional and uplifting.

From the sensory and music rooms to the multi-faith space and family accommodation, the hospice is thoughtfully designed to offer both medical care and emotional comfort. One father, whose son is cared for at the hospice, gave a moving speech: “For the first time, we felt peace. We knew our son was in good hands, and we could just be a family again.”

Alfie also presented TLC teddies and therapeutic colouring books, part of a new Masonic initiative – small gifts that brought joy and comfort to the children.

The Need Is Still Great

Despite the outstanding work being done, Noah’s Ark faces a 2025 funding requirement of £4.9 million, with only 7% of its income coming from government sources. The remainder is raised through charitable giving.

Currently supporting over 350 children and their families each year, the hospice provides expert palliative care from the point of diagnosis – working hand-in-hand with NHS trusts and social care partners to deliver compassionate, child-centred services.

Let’s Keep Building That Legacy

Noah’s Ark was founded by Michael McInerney, who was moved to action after the death of a child in his family. Since its founding, it has become a national leader in paediatric hospice care.

As Freemasons, our commitment to charity lies at the core of who we are. Supporting Noah’s Ark is not only a tradition but a profound expression of our values in action. With your continued help, we can ensure that more children like Beatrice – and families like hers – receive the love, care, and dignity they so richly deserve.
