Building Together – Stronger Lodges, Stronger Chapters, Stronger Middlesex
Every successful Lodge and Chapter has something in common: members who enjoy their Freemasonry, feel valued, and look forward to their next meeting. But what happens when numbers begin to fall, enthusiasm starts to fade, or finding the next generation of Officers becomes a challenge?
The good news is that no Lodge or Chapter in Middlesex needs to face these challenges alone.
Over the past year, you may have heard about Building Together, an initiative introduced by the United Grand Lodge of England (UGLE). But what does it actually mean for your Lodge or Chapter, and more importantly, how can it help?
At its heart, Building Together is about making Freemasonry the best possible experience for every member, from the moment they first express an interest in joining, through their Craft journey and into the Royal Arch, and throughout their Masonic lives.
By bringing together the Members’ Pathway and Archway programmes, UGLE has created a single, joined-up approach under the banner One Journey – One Organisation.
And here’s the important bit: it’s not another set of rules, more paperwork, or someone telling your Lodge or Chapter how to run its affairs.
It’s about sharing good ideas, learning from experience and making sure that, when a little help is needed, the right people are there to provide it.
Five Simple Ideas That Can Make a Big Difference
Building Together focuses on five key areas:
- Shape – Creating Lodges and Chapters that members are proud to belong to.
- Attract – Encouraging new people to discover Freemasonry and become part of our organisation.
- Continue – Supporting members as they progress through their Masonic journey.
- Engage – Keeping members involved, interested and enthusiastic.
- Respond – Listening to members, recognising challenges and taking positive action.
Behind these five principles sits a wealth of practical guidance, including more than 80 resources available through Solomon, UGLE’s online learning platform.
But let’s be realistic. Most Lodges and Chapters don’t need another collection of documents to read. What they need is practical help with the things that matter to them.
That’s where Middlesex comes in.
The Middlesex Approach – Help When You Need It
Across our Province, we have an enormous amount of Masonic knowledge, enthusiasm and experience. Building Together gives us an opportunity to put that experience to work for the benefit of every Lodge and Chapter.
Perhaps your Lodge would like to attract a few new members. Maybe you’re finding it difficult to fill the progressive offices, or would welcome some fresh ideas for keeping newer members involved.
Your Chapter might be looking to encourage more Master Masons to discover the Royal Arch, or perhaps you’d simply like to make your meetings and festive boards even more enjoyable.
Whatever the challenge, there’s a good chance someone in Middlesex has faced something similar and can offer some helpful advice.
To make that expertise accessible, the Provincial Executive has specialist teams covering attraction, membership, Royal Arch support, mentoring, learning and development, and Almoner support.
These teams aren’t there to interfere or take over. They’re there to work alongside you, share ideas and help your Lodge or Chapter build on its strengths.
Your Visiting Officer – A Friendly Face and a Helping Hand
One of the most important people in making Building Together work is your Visiting Officer.
Visiting Officers already play a valuable role in maintaining the relationship between individual Lodges and Chapters and the Province. They get to know the members, understand the character of each Unit and can often recognise opportunities that might otherwise be overlooked.
Think of your Visiting Officer as a friendly link to the wider resources of Middlesex.
During a visit or conversation, they might discuss how your Lodge is attracting candidates, how newer members are progressing, or whether Past Masters could play a greater role in supporting the future of the Lodge.
If some additional help would be welcome, your Visiting Officer can work through their Assistant Provincial Grand Master to bring in the appropriate specialist team.
It’s a straightforward approach, designed around what you need rather than what someone else thinks you should be doing.
And, importantly, there is no obligation to accept assistance. Every Lodge and Chapter retains its own identity, traditions and independence.
Keeping Our Lodges and Chapters Thriving
Every Lodge and Chapter has a history worth celebrating. Some have been meeting for generations, building friendships, supporting good causes and creating memories that last a lifetime.
When a Unit begins to struggle, it’s about much more than declining membership figures. It’s about the possibility of losing something that generations of Freemasons have worked hard to build.
We all recognise that circumstances change and that, occasionally, a closure may be unavoidable. But it should always be the last resort, not the first option.
Sometimes a fresh approach to attracting members, a little additional mentoring, or simply talking through the challenges with someone who has been there before can make a real difference.
The earlier we start those conversations, the more opportunities we have to find a positive way forward.
Building Together is about helping Lodges and Chapters remain vibrant, welcoming and enjoyable places to be, not just for today’s members, but for those who will follow in their footsteps.
Together, We Can Make Middlesex Even Stronger
Middlesex has a great deal to be proud of. We have dedicated members, wonderful traditions, and a wealth of experience across our Lodges and Chapters.
Building Together is an opportunity to make even better use of those strengths, to share what works, support one another and ensure that every member gets the most from their Freemasonry.
You don’t need to be facing a problem to benefit. Perhaps your Lodge or Chapter is already thriving but would welcome a few new ideas. That’s just as good a reason to start a conversation.
So, next time you see your Visiting Officer, have a chat. Share what’s going well, talk about what could be better, and explore what’s possible.
Because Building Together isn’t really about programmes, processes or paperwork.
It’s about people, friendships and making sure that Freemasonry in Middlesex continues to flourish for generations to come.
One Journey. One Organisation. One Middlesex.
