What on Earth is the Middlesex 1870 Committee?

If you’ve heard whispers about the “1870 Committee” and wondered if it’s a secret cabal of Freemasons aged 18 to 70 plotting world domination… well, you’re close, but not quite! It’s actually something far less sinister (and definitely more fun).

Here’s the lowdown:

What is it?

The Middlesex 1870 Committee is like the social butterfly of Middlesex Freemasonry. Its mission is to plan, coordinate and oversee social events across the Province, making sure we’re all singing from the same hymn sheet and that no two events clash. Think of it as a party planner but with aprons and handshakes.

Why 1870?

Ah, 1870. A fine year! No, we weren’t named after the average age of a Freemason. That was the year that the Province of Middlesex was officially consecrated. We’ve taken the name to honour this landmark moment in Masonic history—and because “Random Committee That Plans Events” didn’t have the same ring to it.

Chairman of the Middx 1870 Committee, Nigel Codron.

Who’s involved?

The committee is chaired by the indefatigable Nigel Codron, PSGD, PAsstProvGM. Alongside him is a crack team of Freemasons from across the Province, working hard to make sure we all have a good time—whether it’s the Fete/Fun Day, Light Blues Club, socials, or a WM Dinner. They’re like the Avengers of Middlesex events, minus the lycra (well, we hope).

How can you get involved?

This is where you come in! We’re always looking for eager members to lend a hand, share ideas, or just help spread the word. Whether you want to attend, support, or even organise an event, there’s a role for everyone—whether you’re a sprightly Light Blue or one of our “seasoned” brethren who swears they remember 1870 firsthand.

So next time you hear “1870 Committee,” remember, it’s not an age range (18 to 70), it’s a vibrant group of Freemasons making sure Middlesex events are well-organised, well-attended, and (most importantly) fun. Want to help or have an idea? Drop Nigel a line—he’s always happy to hear from you nigel.codron@pglm.org.uk.
