The Visitor Gets The Chair

Robert with Installing Master W. Bro Julian Saunders PADDC, PProvSGW

There is an old tradition in Freemasonry that a visitor should never truly feel like a stranger. Some Brethren arrive quietly, sign the book, enjoy the festive board, and continue on their travels. Others, however, become something far more special. Over time, through dedication, friendship, and service, they cease to feel like visitors at all.

Such is the story of W. Bro. Robert James Thomas.

For many years, Robert has been an active and respected Freemason within the Provinces of Somerset and Devon, following in the footsteps of his stepfather, W. Bro. Joseph Furneaux-Gotch PProvGSwdB, the long-serving Secretary of Justicia Lodge No. 2563.

Robert first began visiting Middlesex and Justicia Lodge in 2014. From the outset, it became clear that he was not merely attending meetings; he was contributing to them. Whether stepping seamlessly into an office at short notice, assisting with ceremony, or delivering ritual with confidence and precision, he quickly earned the respect and affection of the Brethren.

Many a Lodge meeting was strengthened by his presence.

Though living in Crewkerne, in South Somerset, some 120 miles from Cole Court, distance never seemed to diminish either his enthusiasm or his commitment. Time after time he made the considerable journey to support the Lodge.

Indeed, he served in numerous offices before ever formally joining the Lodge, standing in as Junior Deacon, Senior Deacon, and Inner Guard on many occasions, always carrying out the duties with calm dignity and exemplary ritual.

Eventually, in 2024, Robert reached a conclusion that many within Justicia had already quietly accepted. After a decade of loyal visiting, Justicia Lodge no longer felt like somewhere he attended. It felt like home.

And so, despite the miles between Somerset and Middlesex, he joined both the Lodge and the Province officially, strengthening a bond that had already long existed in spirit.

His progression thereafter seemed only natural. In 2025 he was appointed Senior Warden, where his steady presence, knowledge, and good humour further endeared him to the Brethren.

Then, on Friday 22nd May 2026, in a ceremony filled with warmth, friendship, and no small measure of pride, W. Bro. Robert James Thomas was installed into the Chair of King Solomon as Worshipful Master of Justicia Lodge No. 2563.

It was, in many ways, a remarkable occasion.

Not simply because a Brother had travelled so far.

Not simply because a visitor had become Master.

But because it perfectly demonstrated one of the enduring truths of Freemasonry:

That the Craft is not built upon geography, convenience, or circumstance.

It is built upon fellowship.

Upon service.

Upon commitment.

And upon the quiet bonds formed between good men who meet together in harmony.

For some visitors sign the book and depart.

Others stay long enough to become part of the furniture.

And every now and then…

The visitor gets the Chair.
