The Young Master’s Chair

Friday 26th June 2026 proved to be a memorable evening for Sutton Court Lodge No. 7826, in the Province of Middlesex, when W. Bro. Nicolai Webber was installed as Worshipful Master at the age of just 25. Coming exactly one month after his birthday, the timing was almost suspiciously neat—as though the Lodge calendar itself had decided to join in the celebration.

For Nicolai, taking the Chair of King Solomon was a significant personal achievement, but it was also a proud family moment and a notable occasion for the Lodge. Sutton Court has always valued fellowship, continuity and service, and the installation of such a young Master brought an extra sense of energy to the evening.

Among those present was Nicolai’s father, W. Bro. Robert Webber, who serves the Lodge as Secretary and who had the pleasure and pride of seeing his son take the Master’s Chair. Also attending was W. Bro. Andy Bell from Wiltshire, Nicolai’s First Cousin Once Removed, representing the third generation of the family and adding another branch to the well-established Masonic family tree.

The occasion carried an especially poignant historical echo. Fifty years earlier, Nicolai’s grandfather, W. Bro. Tony Webber, had been installed for the first time as Worshipful Master of St. George’s Lodge No. 3818, in the Province of Warwickshire. Half a century later, the family found itself once again gathered around the Master’s Chair, proving that some traditions do not so much fade with time as quietly wait for the next generation to catch up.

Nicolai’s connection with Freemasonry began long before this installation. He recalled being ten years old when his grandparents’ ashes were scattered at Guy’s Cliffe Masonic Centre in Warwickshire. On that occasion, the Secretary of St George’s Lodge showed him where his grandfather used to sit in chapel and explained the rudiments of Freemasonry. “I was fascinated with what I was told,” Nicolai remembered. “On the way home, I told Dad that when I grew up, I wanted to be a Mason…and here I am, fifteen years later, Master of my mother Lodge.” It was, by any measure, a rather impressive example of following through on a childhood ambition.

In taking office, W. Bro. Nicolai Webber follows in distinguished family footsteps while beginning his own year of leadership. His installation brought together youth, family, memory and Masonic service in a way that was both touching and uplifting.

For Sutton Court Lodge, it was not only an installation meeting, but a celebration of continuity, affection and the enduring ability of Freemasonry to connect generations—occasionally with impeccable timing.
