W Bro Alan Hykin with RW Bro David Allan ProProvGM

The Masonic community is built upon dedication, perseverance, and unwavering brotherly support. Few embody these qualities as wholeheartedly as W Bro Alan Hykin. With an extensive Masonic journey spanning over a decade and an unbreakable commitment to his Lodge and Chapter, Alan has been rightfully recognised with an infield promotion to Past Provincial Junior Grand Deacon (PPJGD). This prestigious honour was personally bestowed upon him at his home by Pro Provincial Grand Master Right W Bro David Allan on 7th January 2025, joined by esteemed brethren including W Bro Warren Gell, Assistant Provincial Grand Master, and W Bro David North, W Bro Mike Ross, W Bro Peter Hosie-Kingham, W Bro Hugh Saville, W Bro John Deady, and W Bro Peter Short.

A Journey of Dedication and Progression

Initiated into Craft Masonry on 27th May 2011, Alan’s progression through the Masonic ranks has been nothing short of exemplary. Advancing steadily through the offices within Royal Hanover Lodge No. 1777, he became Master of the Lodge in 2018-2019 and later served as Immediate Past Master from 2019-2020. His leadership and mentorship have been invaluable to both new and seasoned brethren alike.

His commitment extended beyond Craft Masonry into the Royal Arch, where he was exalted into Chapter on 15th February 2013. Alan’s dedication saw him rise to the position of Most Excellent Zerubbabel in Royal Hanover Chapter in 2023-2024, having held every preceding office with distinction.

A Guiding Light for Many

Alan’s nearly 100% attendance at Lodge of Instruction on Tuesday evenings at Cole Court speaks volumes about his passion for Freemasonry. His mentorship and encouragement of new members have helped shape the future of the Lodge, making him a trusted and respected figure in Masonic circles. He is also a devoted Royal Arch Freemason, always eager to deepen his understanding and share his knowledge with others.

Beyond the Lodge room, Alan’s character is exemplified by his unwavering support for his family. He stood steadfast by his son Rob during a long and arduous battle with cancer, offering strength and love through numerous stem cell treatments. Today, Rob stands victorious over his illness, a testament to both medical advancements and the power of family resilience. The Lodge also played a crucial role in supporting Rob’s treatment by raising £5000 towards The Blood Fund – Imperial Health Charity of Hammersmith Hospital, which was integral in the success of his stem cell therapy. This generous contribution underscores the deep bonds of fraternity and charity that define the Masonic brotherhood.

An Honour Well Earned

Alan’s dedication to Freemasonry has now been recognised with the rare and esteemed infield promotion to PPJGD. This award reflects not only his commitment but also the high regard in which he is held by his peers and Masonic superiors. The visit by the Pro Provincial Grand Master and other senior brethren to personally confer this promotion underscores the depth of appreciation and respect for Alan’s contributions.

Facing Challenges with Courage

In 2024, Alan faced his own health struggles, being diagnosed with Stage 4 cancer in November. Despite these challenges, his spirit remains strong, and his love for Freemasonry and Chelsea Football Club (since November 1945) endures. He is a beloved and valued member of Royal Hanover Lodge and Chapter, and his perseverance continues to inspire those around him.

Strength in the Face of Adversity

Tragically, soon after receiving his infield promotion, Alan’s health took a rapid decline, and he was hospitalised due to the progressive nature of his illness. The outlook remains poor, and while it is unlikely that he will return home, his strength, acceptance, and unwavering dignity remain a testament to the Freemason he is. In the face of such adversity, Alan has demonstrated an incredible fortitude, embodying the very essence of the values that Freemasonry holds dear—courage, wisdom, and an unshakeable sense of brotherhood. His resilience and grace during this difficult time continue to inspire all who have had the privilege to know him.

Alan’s story is a testament to resilience, dedication, and the strength of the Masonic brotherhood. His journey serves as a shining example for all Masons, proving that commitment and integrity do not go unnoticed. His remarkable contributions will remain a cherished part of Royal Hanover’s legacy for years to come.
