W Bro Peter Swatton, PProvJGD, Communications Team Member takes a look at one of Middlesex Freemasonry’s Special Interest Lodges.
The Philip Bull & Motor Enthusiasts Lodge 7731 and named in honour of Lieutenant Colonel Philip C. Bull (1889–1960) the Provincial Grand Master of Middlesex from 1950 to 1960. The lodge, consecrated in 1960, has evolved into a vibrant community of like-minded brethren. Whilst respecting Masonic traditions, the lodge also celebrates a passion for cars, bikes, and motoring heritage, making this lodge an exciting and distinctive place to be.
The Philip Bull & Motor Enthusiasts Lodge is proud to have a diverse mix of members, from its youngest, Josh Carr in his early twenties, to the most senior member, W Bro Geoff Hawkins, PPSGW, who at 99 years young shows no signs of slowing down!
More Than Just Lodge Meetings – A Passion for Motoring!
Beyond the formal lodge gatherings (twice a year at Cole Court, Twickenham), members are encouraged to take part in extracurricular motoring events. One of its upcoming highlights includes breakfast at the Ace Café for Ford Cortina Day 0n 26th April 2025—a nostalgic and enjoyable experience for any car enthusiast. Whether you own a classic or simply appreciate them, these outings provide great opportunities to bond with fellow members over shared interests.
Meet Some Enthusiastic Members
The Philip Bull & Motor Enthusiasts Lodge is full of fascinating individuals who bring their own unique stories and experiences:
🔹 W.Bro John Powell, PPSGD, our dedicated secretary, is also the archivist for the Morris Car Club. He owns two vintage vehicles, including a 1929 Morris Cowley that has been in his family for generations. He even learned to drive and passed his test in it!
🔹 Bro Christy Chelvendra, a Freemason of 25 years, drives a pristine Bentley Continental R Coupe Mulliner—a true work of art from the era of hand-built luxury cars. His passion for motoring is only matched by his impeccable style and warm personality.
🔹 Bro Philip Hatton, our Junior Warden and events coordinator, has a background in electrical engineering but is also well-known in the motoring world. From competing in the Gumball Rally as Batman in the 1989 Batmobile to winning Sky TV’s Carnage demolition car show, he brings energy and excitement to the lodge. His charity work through Evolution MX has raised thousands for great causes, including special appearances from stunt legend Eddie Kidd.
A Lodge That Gives Back
Freemasonry is about more than fellowship—it’s also about charity. Over the years, The Philip Bull & Motor Enthusiasts Lodge has donated thousands of pounds to worthy causes, supporting both Masonic and motoring-related charities.
For more information about the lodge or to visit as a guest, contact the secretary John Powell (flatnosejp@googlemail.com ) or Philip Hatton (hollywoodhatton@gmail.com).
There is so much going on at this lodge, that a follow up story about Bro Philip Hatton is inevitable.
